Industrial infrastructure

Industrial estates & zones — 8+ major clusters:

Estate / zone Notes
SITE (Sindh Industrial Trading Estate) Established in 1947 and designated in 1963, spanning 9,700 acres (18–19 km²) northwest of the city centre. Approximately 2,000–2,400 factories — the largest industrial area in Pakistan — employing more than 500,000 people.
Korangi Industrial Area (KIA) Over 10,000 acres, established in 1960, with over 5,000 industrial, commercial, and service concerns. Premier hub for textiles, leather, pharmaceuticals, chemicals, engineering, and food sectors.
North Karachi Industrial Area (NKIA) 725 acres, established in 1974, with more than 2,500 industries under NKATI; the vast majority are direct exporters.
Bin Qasim Industrial Zone More than 25,000 acres in the Port Qasim area, hosting 180 large and medium-size operational units. Around 80% of Pakistan’s entire automotive industry footprint is located at Port Qasim.
Landhi Industrial Area Established in 1958; one of the four largest legacy industrial estates in Karachi, on the city’s eastern outskirts.
Federal B Industrial Area A 2 km² urban enclave roughly 15 km from the city centre. Established in 1960 by KDA; primarily cottage industries and apparel units.
Karachi Export Processing Zone (KEPZ) On the city’s outskirts; a highly regulated zone dedicated exclusively to export-oriented manufacturing.
Karachi Port Trust Industrial Area Spans 2 km² with 20 key heavy industrial units, including Karachi Shipyard & Engineering Works and the Naval Dockyard, alongside major oil depots, ghee refineries, and chemical facilities.

District industry profiles

Korangi District — division lead

5,000+ establishments (largest concentration in the division): textiles, leather, pharmaceuticals, chemicals, engineering, paints, spices, biscuits, tea, and cooking oil among its core industries.

Employment & processing footprint: KIA alone hosts 5,000+ concerns employing 1.5 million workers. Korangi Sector 7-A operates as Pakistan’s largest leather raw material processing and finished goods hub. Reference: Sindh Directorate of Industries / Karachi Chamber of Commerce (industry context).

Keamari District

Port-centric economy. Home to Karachi Port, massive crude oil refineries, petrochemical storage complexes, edible oil refineries, and parts of the legacy SITE industrial zone. It serves as the primary maritime gateway handling 60% of Pakistan’s total import and export trade.

Karachi East District

Functions as a dense, mixed-use commercial and light-industrial corridor where the Federal B Area and portions of North Karachi intersect. It maintains an extensive footprint of domestic cottage industries, textiles, garment dyeing, and chemical units.

Karachi West District

An urban manufacturing corridor that captures significant industrial chunks of SITE alongside thousands of specialized small and medium enterprises (SMEs) focused on textiles, weaving, and plastics.

Karachi Central District

A highly congested, densely commercial trade environment. It is anchored by massive regional wholesale hubs (covering electronics, wholesale cloth, and pharmaceuticals) alongside domestic light consumer goods manufacturing.

Malir District

Karachi’s largest district by total land area, presenting a unique developmental mix of urban-industrial zones (textile mills, commercial ceramics, bulk chemicals) and semi-rural agricultural tracts. The Export Processing Zone falls into this dynamic, with approximately 60% of Pakistan’s combined exports and imports originating from the joint Landhi–Korangi–Malir corridor.

Karachi South District

The historic, commercial, and financial core of the country. It houses the administrative blocks of the Karachi Port Trust, the head offices of national financial services, heavy wholesale trade complexes, and the Karachi Shipyard & Engineering Works (KSEW).

Manufacturing establishments by district

PBS PSIC-wise counts for five districts; Korangi and Keamari establishment totals are not listed in the source table.
